It's designed to be a space where entrepreneurs, emerging funds, and investors from across the country can find one another, pool their knowledge, and work together to grow Canada's impact economy faster than they can working alone.
The Social Finance Fund (SFF) is a long term, $755 million initiative to accelerate the growth of Canada's social finance market. It is one of the core initiatives of the Social Innovation and Social Finance Strategy, alongside the Social Innovation Advisory Council and the completed Investment Readiness Program.
Launched in Spring 2023, the SFF is improving access to affordable capital for charities, non-profits, social enterprises, co-operatives and other social purpose organizations (SPOs). Greater access to capital through the SFF helps these organizations to grow, innovate, and enhance their social and environmental impacts, while promoting more inclusive economic development for communities in Canada.
The SFF makes repayable investment capital available to entities in the social finance ecosystem. It is managed by three fund managers that will invest up to $400 million over the first five years of the program into social finance intermediaries (SFIs) across the country. These SFIs are using that capital to make social finance investments in SPOs who, in turn, use those investment dollars to generate positive social and/or environmental impacts.
The SFF is designed to leverage capital from private investors and to produce financial returns, supporting market growth and sustainability.
When charities, not-for-profits and social enterprises have access to capital and investment, they can bring forward innovative solutions to some of Canada's most pressing social, economic, and environmental challenges.
